What is the most appropriate thickness of a mattress topper we should use?
A mattress topper is meant to supplement the softness, luxury and support features of a mattress. You may place a mattress topper for the sake of increasing the overall thickness of your mattress, to make the mattress feel more even and avoid saggy depressions on the surface or you may also use them to improve the level of support that you need for therapeutic purposes.
When you are planning to buy a mattress topper you may have a lot of concerns in defining the basic criteria of the best mattress topper you want to buy. By sorting out a few basic things you can surely find the best option for you. So, if we look at the most important things we should be considering while choosing the best mattress topper, the first thing that comes in mind is its thickness. What thickness level is the best one for you, or which thickness measure would serve the purpose, you need to fulfill.
So, if you are feeling ambiguous in making your final decision about the appropriate thickness of your mattress topper, then here is a brief guide to provide a comprehensive solution for this issue.
The first thing that you have to be clear about is the availability of various thicknesses and sizes.
Note: If you are going to buy a memory foam mattress topper then you must be considering the thickness level and density of the mattress topper to make sure you get the right level of comfort you need.
In most of the cases, a mattress topper is available in three basic thickness ranges:
#1. 2 inches and 1.5 inches
#2. 3 inches
#3. 4 inches
These three thickness levels are standard and you can find any kind of mattress topper material having a thickness within this range.
2 inches thick mattress topper:
A mattress topper having a 2 inch thickness (or thinner) is the thinnest mattress topper that is capable of introducing more comfort and softness to your bedding system. It can give you an extra luxurious feel.
You should only buy a thin mattress topper when you have got a brand new mattress which is already giving you enough comfort and support and you only want to add an extra soft layer on it. Such a mattress topper is not good enough when you need extra support to your body or you want to compliment your sagging bed and cover indentation on the surface of the bed.
3 inches thick mattress topper:
3 inches thick mattress topper is a bit firmer, supportive and bulky as compared to the thin 2 inch mattress topper. So, it can be considered as a better option for those who need comfort as well as an extra support to the body of the user.
For those who want to reduce back pain, 3 inches topper is the best topper for back pain.
This kind of topper will also give a reasonable cover for a mattress having a little loosened surface and may improve the overall comfort and support as provided by the mattress.
4 inches thick mattress topper:
A mattress topper having 4 inches of thickness is the maximum thickness a mattress topper can have because if we go further then the mattress topper would be considered as a standard sized mattress itself.
So, for people who have an old mattress, with lots of pressed areas and lack of sufficient support, this thickness would be the best to make sure the topper will cover the mattress completely and will provide the user a straight, soft and well adjusted surface to sleep without any body aches.
The important thing is that you must select the thickness of the mattress topper, according to your comfort needs and the actual condition of your mattress itself. Such toppers can also be very useful in conditions when you don’t want to spend a lot to buy a new mattress and you can improve the old one by spending almost half amount of money, as compared to buying a new mattress.
Overall, if you need a moderate level of comfort and a slight increase in the supportive features of your mattress, you should go for a 3 inches mattress topper.

Thanks for the detailed info about the firm toppers. I bought a king mattress of BEAUTYREST brand from Sears last year. I was told by the sales person that this will be the best for arthritic pain, the top is firm but not hard, so it will be comfortable. I bought spending $ 1400. in 2 weeks it started sagging. I did many complaints, but no response as they keep on denying. I develop severe back pain with it. So I need a firm topper for better support for back pain. Your input will be highly appreciated.
Thanks.
