Duvet vs Comforter – The Difference & Similarity

Duvet vs Comforter? What is a duvet? What is a duvet cover? What is a comforter? What is the difference and similarity between them? We’ll talk all about these things in this article. Keep reading…

If you are here, it means you’re probably confused and unsure about the difference between duvet and comforter. Why do duvets usually go with covers and not comforters? Which feels better? Are they even two different things at all?

We tend to disregard the seemingly similar products when it comes to our bedroom while we shouldn’t do that. Knowing about these items will help you build the most comfortable bedding system and gain the best sleeping experience.

Duvet & Comforter – What Are They?

Comforter: A thick, fluffy blanket that goes on top of other additional thin blankets you want to use. A comforter typically features synthetic materials stitched and secure in a pattern. Comforters come in the bedding set, along with pillow shams and sheets. They are typically in the same size as the bed, which means they are the final piece in your bedding system, no other accessories needed.

Duvet: A flatter, softer alternative of a comforter. The main materials of its fill are feather or wool. Unlike comforters, they don’t usually have a stitch pattern. They need to go in a cover, yet they offer enough warmth, and supplementary sheets become unnecessary.

Since we are at it, we might as well get some useful information about duvet cover and coverlet.

  • Duvet covers have the same use as pillow shams to pillows. You will attach the duvet cover to your duvet by using the buttons or ties it has. As they are removable, you can easily remove them for washing or re-decorating. For sure, a cover will be compatible with a comforter as well, as long as their sizes are the same, but it isn’t necessary.
  • Coverlets are top blankets, quilted or woven. They mostly serve as a decorative layer, but not attachable. Therefore, you can bring them from bed to a chair or sofa.

Duvet & Comforter – The Similarity and Difference

As you have seen in the definition, they share many similarities but they aren’t the same. Here’s a more comprehensive comparison:

The similarity between duvet and comforter

+ Fitting for all seasons – you can bask in the comfort and luxury of theirs anytime in the year.

+ Filling them both full are the feathers, down, or fibers.

+ Cozy and fluffy, they will protect you from the cold at night and embrace you with their plushness.

Duvet & Comforter – The Difference

DuvetComforter
Fluffy level: Higher. Duvets come with more fill power, hence they are likely to be fluffier.Probably less fluffy.
Duvets might have a sewn-through pattern but they are often more like a gigantic, loose bag.Sew pattern is a must for comforters. Via sewn-through, the fill will be distributed evenly.
Usually smaller.Larger in size, they are able to give you more coverage.

The list might have exceptions depending on the manufacturers, but there’s one constant difference between duvet and comforter: a duvet needs to go with a cover, while a comforter is a bedding item that’s ready for usage as soon as you unpack it.

Duvet vs Comforter – Pros and Cons

Now you are able to tell which is which, but it probably won’t help you decide. Therefore, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each, see what fits your needs, and choose.

Duvet – Pros and Cons

Pros

+ Easy maintenance: the cover will protect the duvet from getting dirty too frequently, so you will save a remarkable amount of money.

+ Easy decoration: if you are keen on decorating your house, specifically bedroom, and following different trends of colors and designs, you would love to change the cover whenever you feel like it.

+ Rather inexpensive: a duvet is basically a giant bag of down or fibers, it won’t cost too much.

Cons

– Changing its cover is tiring: you need to be fairly skilled if you want to do this all by yourself.

– They are not fixed: even the slightest movements you make during sleep will take its toll on the ties keeping the duvet and the cover in place. You will have to check on the corners every week.

– Extra expenditure: not all sheet sets include a cover, so you might need to invest in this additional piece.

Comforter – Pros and Cons

Pros

+ Sold in sets: your comforter will come in a package with matching pillows and blankets. It makes the bed-dressing less complicated since you have everything in a box.

+ Already cute itself: comforters have cute patterns, prints, textures, and your only task is to pick a favorite model. The cover isn’t quite necessary if you go for a comforter.

+ Simplicity at its best: you won’t have to go through the hassle of stuffing it in a cover. It’s one-pieced and easy.

Cons

– Not interchangeable: it’s not for fickle hearts. The comforters are typically dressy and meant to be with you for a long time instead of going to the storage after a couple of months.

– May go flat eventually: the fill of the comforter will wear down and leave you no choice other than replacing it, preferably with a stuffing similar to the original.

– Not easy to clean: many comforters are only suitable for dry-washing. If you have a baby or hate seeing anything dirty, comforters might be a bad choice.
